Caterpillar (personal)

July 28, 2018

Caterpillars are butterflies in the making, a garden reality!

I mig-welded two suspension springs end to end and shaped into this caterpillar using heat from an oxy torch.  Because the tree was handy, I followed the curve of a limb but as you can see, it will equally look at home on the ground or another tree.  The legs have some holes (ex cultivator tines) through which to attach the caterpillar to a limb.  The stainless steel soup spoons made lovely eyes and feelers.  Across the back I stretched some mattress mesh.  The finish is Penetrol rust inhibitor.

106 cms long, 40 cms high, 16 cms wide (42" long, 16" high, 7" wide)

Vehicle suspension springs, old mattress mesh, soup spoons, scrap metal bits
